Farmer Producer Organisation
The Journey
The journey of the Kuldomari FPO began with a simple but powerful idea: to empower tribal farmers in one of India’s most underdeveloped regions—Kuldomari, Sonbhadra—through collective enterprise, regenerative agriculture, and inclusive development. Rooted in a region marked by fertile land yet plagued by poverty, migration, and developmental neglect, the FPO emerged as a structured response to unlock potential through community ownership and sustainable farming.
Our vision is to create a scalable model of green, equitable, and regenerative rural development—where farmers are not just cultivators but owners, entrepreneurs, and stewards of the land. We envision a future where rural communities thrive through sustainable agriculture, cooperative strength, and self-reliance, leading the way toward climate resilience, social equity, and economic dignity.

A Region of Untapped Potential

25000 PEOPLE
Located in the southern part of Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, Kuldomari—commonly referred to as Bhaat—is a predominantly tribal region with over 25,000 residents, the majority of whom are small and marginal farmers. Spanning nearly 200 sq. km. of fertile land, the region holds immense agricultural and ecological promise, yet continues to face deep rooted disparities.
Despite its proximity to one of India’s largest energy producers (ATPS), Kuldomari has received minimal benefit from surrounding industrial activity. Access to basic social and physical infrastructure, including education, healthcare, irrigation, and rural connectivity, remains severely limited.
Key challenges include:
-
Crop vulnerability due to lack of protective measures against animal intrusions
-
Scarcity of alternative livelihoods, forcing youth migration
-
Low literacy levels and limited technical skills, reducing upward mobility.
-
Minimal access to water, technology, and innovation isolates the region from modern growth narratives
Yet, within these challenges lies opportunity. With its rich soil, strong community fabric, and untapped human capital, Kuldomari offers a fertile ground-literally and figuratively-for regenerative, inclusive, and sustainable development. Our pilot project begins here, with the aim to redefine rural prosperity by building a model that is green, equitable, and self-reliant.

While each farmer is expected to contribute one bigha, many have voluntarily pledged 10 to 15 bighas, reflecting their deepening confidence in the initiative and openness to innovative, regenerative practices. This enthusiastic participation underscores the credibility of our model and the shared belief in its long-term potential.
It is also important to note that, unlike conventional industrial expansion models that rely on land acquisition, this initiative is built on a foundation of collaborative ownership. Farmers retain full ownership of their land while entering into strategic partnerships that enable the development of regenerative agroforestry and sustainability-focused rural enterprises. This approach ensures inclusive growth, respects local land rights, and creates long-term value for both the community and the environment.

Two Farms One Borewell
At the heart of our FPO model is a commitment to community building and shared prosperity. Instead of installing individual borewells for each farm, our approach facilitates shared irrigation infrastructure, where one borewell serves two adjacent farms. This strategy fosters collaboration among farmers, optimises resource use, and significantly reduces capital expenditure. By promoting collective ownership and operational efficiency, it reinforces the core values of our FPO: mutual support, sustainable development, and inclusive rural growth.

Collective Fund
Our FPO operates a dedicated member credit fund that provides low-interest loans to support farmers’ short-term needs and livelihood investments. Designed with a clear repayment structure, this fund enhances financial security by offering accessible, community-backed credit—reducing dependence on informal or high-interest lending sources. It also fosters responsible borrowing habits, encourages financial discipline, and ensures capital circulation within the FPO ecosystem. By building a culture of trust and financial resilience, the fund strengthens our members’ economic stability while reinforcing the FPO’s role as a reliable and self-sustaining institution.
Transport Services
Our FPO provides affordable transport services exclusively for its members, ensuring reliable access to both agricultural markets and essential services. Offered at highly subsidised rates, this shared mobility solution supports the timely and cost-effective transportation of farm produce, while also serving as a means of personal transit for rural households. By addressing a critical infrastructure gap, the initiative enhances market connectivity, reduces post-harvest losses, and improves overall quality of life—reinforcing our commitment to inclusive, farmer-centric development.
